1984 (original title: Nineteen Eighty-Four) is a dystopian political novel by George Orwell, published in 1949. Set in a bleak future where the world is divided into totalitarian superstates, the story takes place in Oceania, a regime ruled by the omnipresent and omnipotent Big Brother.

The protagonist, Winston Smith, works at the Ministry of Truth, where his job is to rewrite historical records to match the Party’s ever-changing narrative. But Winston secretly despises the regime and dreams of rebellion. When he begins a forbidden love affair with Julia, he’s drawn into a dangerous game of resistance—one that leads to betrayal, torture, and the terrifying power of psychological control.
