Or, une feuille se colle malencontreusement sur son dos et laisse un point vulnérable entre les omoplates.

Le valeureux Siegfried est assassiné par Hagen Tronje, conseiller de Gunther, le roi des Burgondes. Folle de douleur, sa veuve Kriemhild quitte les rives du Rhin. Elle épouse Etzel, le chef des Huns, afin de bénéficier de sa protection et de pouvoir préparer sa vengeance. La jeune femme donne naissance à un garçon. Kriemhild convie Gunther et Hagen à un grand banquet qu’elle donne à l’occasion du solstice d’été.

Bold, fearless Siegfried travels to King Gunther’s castle. On the way he kills a dragon, and an evil dwarf king, thus gaining a treasure and a magic helmet of invisibility and illusion. In return for permission to marry Gunther’s sister Kriemhild, Siegfried agrees to use the helmet to help the weak Gunther win the fierce warrior queen Brunhild by trickery. The two couples are married, but when the furious Brunhild discovers the deception she compels Gunther and his evil vassal Hagen into a conspiracy to murder Siegfried. Kriemhild vows revenge
