Travaillant pour l’O.S.I. (Office of Scientific Investigation), l’agent Jeffrey Stewart, membre d’A-Man, et son partenaire Dan Forbes sont envoyés dans une quincaillerie locale où ils découvrent qu’un puissant champ magnétique a magnétisé tous les objets métalliques du magasin. En poursuivant leurs investigations, ils finissent par remonter la source du magnétisme jusqu’à un avion transportant le scientifique Howard Denker, actuellement en train de mourir d’une intoxication aux radiations, qui a transporté avec lui un nouvel élément radioactif qu’il a bombardé de particules alpha pendant 200 heures. Cet élément, baptisé « serranium », croît géométriquement en créant de la matière à partir de l’énergie qu’il absorbe des objets métalliques qui l’entourent. Stewart calcule que si la substance n’est pas détruite rapidement, elle aura atteint une taille suffisante pour projeter la Terre hors de son orbite d’ici 24 heures environ.

The magnetic monster

Working for O.S.I., the Office of Scientific Investigation, A-Man agent Jeffrey Stewart and his partner Dan Forbes are sent to a local hardware store where they find a strong magnetic field has magnetized every metal item in the store. Investigating further, they eventually trace the source of the magnetism to an airborn flight carrying scientist Howard Denker, now dying of radiation poisoning, who has carted on board with him a new radioactive element which he has bombarded with alpha particles for 200 hours. The element, dubbed ‘serranium’ grows geometrically by creating matter out of energy which it absorbs from metallic objects surrounding it. Stewart calculates that if the substance is not destroyed soon that within 24 hours or so it will have grown large enough to throw Earth out of its orbit.
